SeaWorld Hopes You Forget About 'Blackfish' With These Shiny New Tanks

SeaWorld hopes putting some waterproof lipstick on itself will make you love it again. The amusement park, which has been submerged in a PR nightmare ever since Blackfish came out last year, announced sweeping new design changes Friday in an effort to lure back fans.

CEO Jim Atchinson said it's going to "transform how visitors experience killers whales" by making their tanks, uh, bigger. The expanded tanks will hold 10 million gallons of water for the animals to flop around — more than double the current capacity.

It will also include a "fast water current" to let the whales swim against since exercise is important when you're stuck in captivity.

The project is targeted for a 2018 completion date. SeaWorld swore the new tanks weren't in response to Blackfish, proclaiming that the Blue World Project has been on the drawing board for some time.

Although shareholders might be pleased they're trying something to get the company back on track, PETA slammed the project as a "desperate move."

"A bigger prison is still a prison," the organization said in a statement. True, but this prison has a Shamu show. [BBC News]
