Look at that lonely guy, so tiny and fragile on the edge of the fiery Gates of Hell—the Kilauea Volcano's Halemaumau Crater. His name is Andrew Hara, the photographer who took this amazing self-portrait, which was just featured as photo of the day in National Geographic's Your Shot. How the hell did he do it?

Hara told National Geographic that—armed with his respirator, camera and tripod—he hiked through the closed-off area of the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park while volunteering there. Then he "he carefully set the timer for two minutes and walked around to the farther, visually stable edge of the crater to create this self-portrait."
